How to Use This Website

Here are a few tips for making best use of the UUFS website. Please send any feedback or suggestions to webmaster@uufs.net .

Also see Website Information for Committee Chairs.

How to search for information

An easy way to find information on any topic is to use the search box at the top right of the page. Just enter a word or phrase like “choir” or “social action.”  Posts or pages in which that word or phrase occurs will appear in a list. Click a title to see the expanded content.

How to use the calendar

Upcoming events for the next several days appear on the right sidebar. To see a longer list of events, select “Calendar” from the left sidebar or the top menu bar.

Please help make our calendar complete and accurate by sending all event information to the Administrative Assistant at uufs@uufs.net .

How to use the blog

The blog consists of brief articles and announcements posted by our members. It can provide information that is more dynamic and timely than the content of the site’s standing pages.

Reading the blog

To read individual posts, select a title from the “Recent Posts” menu at the top of the right sidebar.

To see all the most recent posts in one window, select “Weblog” from the left sidebar.

To see all the posts for any month, go to “Previous Posts” in the right sidebar and select a month.

Submitting a comment

Every post to the blog has a space at the bottom to post a comment. Readers don’t have to have usernames and passwords to post comments. However, every reader’s very first comment is posted only after being read and approved by the Webmaster, a mechanism to protect our website from inappropriate comments by strangers.

Subscribing to the blog

You can subscribe to a feed of posts that comes either to your web browser or to your email account.

To sign up to receive posts at your web browser, click on the orange “Posts” icon at the top of the page. Different browsers may handle this feed differently, for example by adding a menu to your menu bar listing the posts.

To sign up to receive a daily email containing any items that members have posted that day, click on the blue envelope icon at the top of the page.

Writing your own posts

UUFS members are encouraged to share information and ideas by posting to our blog. Remember that anything you post will be visible to visitors to our website.

Here are the steps to follow:

Get your username and password from our Administrative Assistant at uufs@uufs.net .

Login to the “Dashboard” at http://uufs.net/wp-admin . You can also get there by selecting “Member Login” from the left sidebar of this site.

Quick method:

Write your post in the QuickPress section on the right of your screen.

Enter the title and text of your post.

Usually you will want to include a byline at the top of your text. (Although your name will appear automatically in the footer of the post, that footer will not be visible to users who subscribe to the blog by email.)

Click “Publish”.

Fancier method:

Open the Posts menu on the left of your screen and select “Add New.”

Enter the title and text of your post.

Usually you will want to include a byline at the top of your text. (Although your name will appear automatically in the footer of the post, that footer will not be visible to users who subscribe to the blog by email.)

Format your text using any of the available buttons.  Use the Visual tab to see your formatted text.  If you are familiar with HTML, you can use the HTML tab to see and edit your code.

Please assign a category to your post to make it easier to find. Use the Categories section at the right of the screen.  You can create a new category if you need one.

Open the Publish menu at the right of the screen and select “Publish.”  You can also select “Save Draft” if you are not ready to publish, or “Preview” to see your post before publishing.

Close the Dashboard window to return to this site.  Your post should appear in the “Recent Posts” section of the right sidebar.

For more detailed instructions, including how to include images in your posts, see step-by-step-guide-to-add-content-in-wordpress1

How to edit pages

Committee chairs and other UUFS leaders may wish to make changes to particular web pages relating to their areas of responsibility. Many of these pages are in the Groups and Activities section of the site.

Submitting changes to the Website Committee

The Website Committee is available to work with members to update and improve the site. We encourage all committees to use their standing pages to inform the congregation about their policies, procedures and activities. For example, the Finance Committee uses its page to inform committees about budget procedures and to inform potential donors about ways of contributing.

Please send all revisions to webmaster@uufs.net . We especially like to receive new pictures!

Editing pages directly

Users with some experience in word processing or page layout may prefer to edit pages on their own. Here are the steps to follow:

Request editing privileges from our Administrative Assistant at uufs@uufs.net .

Login to the dashboard at http://uufs.net/wp-admin . You can also get there by selecting “Member Login” from the left sidebar of this site.

Select “Edit” under “Pages” on the dashboard’s left sidebar.

Locate the page you wish to edit.

Make your desired changes.

Open the Publish menu at the right of the screen and select “Publish.”  You can also select “Save Draft” if you are not ready to publish, or “Preview” to see your post before publishing.
