The 6th Annual Racial Justice Conference is upon us. This year it is being held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County in Media, PA.

This conference will help us focus on personal work to help us become more authentically receptive and wholly present in our congregational relationships and in our community social action. Believing that only bad people have prejudices deters us from examining the effects of internalized feelings of racial superiority and racial oppression. To move Unitarian Universalism into a multiracial, multicultural future, we need to transform our congregations. But first, we must transform ourselves. Come join other UUs as we continue our personal journeys toward wholeness and encourage each other in our spiritual paths.

Fifth ANNUAL FREEDOM FUND BANQUET

Salisbury…. Wicomico County Branch #7028 of the National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People will hold its 5th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet
on Saturday October 2, 2010 at noon at the First Baptist Church Family Life and
Cultural Center (corner of Booth and Delaware Streets).

The banquet speaker is Dr. Thelma B. Thompson, president of the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore. Smooth jazz entertainment will be provided by ‘Jheno
Connections.’

Dr. Thompson will address the theme: ‘Embracing Family, Instilling Education,
and Ensuring Economic Security for All.’ She is a highly sought after speaker
and active educator, Dr. Thompson was recognized by Essence magazine in 2005
as one of the “Women Who are Shaping the World.”

She also was named one of the “100 Most Important Blacks in Technology”
by the Black Engineer and Information Technology Magazine. In 2009,
Dr. Thompson gave the September 2009 commencement address for Walter
Sisulu University for Technology & Science (WSU) in South Africa and
was conferred the honorary doctoral degree of literature and philosophy.

The community is invited to this and all NAACP events. Tickets for adults are

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE
NEXT VISION PLANNING SESSION

The next vision planning session will be Wednesday, September 15th at 6:30 PM at the fellowship. On August 29th we got off to a lively start, generating 101 ideas of what UUFS should be like in 2015! Missed that session? Never fear. We’ll start with a quick review so you can let us know your dreams for the fellowship. After that, we’ll bring order to our ideas as we make our way to developing goals to give us direction as we work toward making our dreams a reality.
We will again have childcare. We hope that all of you, whether you came to the first session or not, will mark September 15th on your calendar and participate in planning the fellowship’s future.

The UUA Congregational Stewardship Services office announces the completion of a successful pilot of the Forward Through the Ages (FORTH) program. FORTH is a multi-year stewardship program designed to promote growth and help fulfill congregational mission. A detailed report, including tools and best practices for Unitarian Universalist congregations, will be available this month.

The UUA General Assembly office is accepting program proposals for the 2011 General Assembly through an online proposal form on UUA.org. The deadline to submit proposals is November 1, 2010.

The UUA Ministries and Faith Development staff group invites congregations to read and discuss the Beacon Press book, The Death of Josseline: Immigration Stories from the Arizona-Mexico Borderlands, by Margaret Regan. An online discussion guide is available for use by congregations, clusters, and districts.

2nd Annual Peace Day in the Park

2ND ANNUAL PEACE DAY IN THE PARK

Mark your calendars! The second annual, local observance of the UN International Day of Peace and Nonviolence (9/21) will be held from 11:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M., Saturday, 9/25, in the Salisbury Park, across from Ben’s Red Swings. In the event of rain, it will move to the YMCA pavilion. The theme is “Peace In Our Community. Peace In Our World.”

A variety of church and community resource groups promoting peace, including UUFS and Salisbury Buddhist Community, will have tables. Perhaps you are part of a group that would like to have a table. If so, please call Lou Rimbach at 410-742-4982.

There will be a peace walk through the park, live music, including the UUFS Choir and Zen Monkeys, and activities for children and youth. All are invited to come, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy this celebration of unity and peace.

Upcoming trips

Witness to a Return Home: A Trip to Uganda, November 4–16

Participants will learn about UUSC’s unique eye-to-eye partnership with Caritas Pader, which has empowered thousands of people to return to their villages and rebuild their lives after a brutal 20-year civil war. Participants will also meet with the UU Kampala congregation; talk with Ugandan leaders of the struggle for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people’s rights; and visit the school and orphanage the Kampala congregation supports near Masaka. Haiti Volunteer Program, 2011 and beyond

Reflecting on the Seventh Annual Civil Rights Journey

This year, 24 people embarked on the seventh UUSC Freedom Summer: A Civil Rights Journey through Georgia and Alabama, July 10–17. Visiting sites of historical significance in the struggle for civil rights, they walked in the footsteps of great civil-rights activists and heard from some of those courageous figures themselves. They listened to the music and protest songs that helped bolster the strength of these history makers. Read how participants were surprised, inspired, and moved.

JustJourneyers Honor Survivors

During the recent JustJourney to Guatemala, July 16–23, participants commemorated the anniversary of the brutal 1982 Plan de Sanchez massacre. They also spent time learning about the work of UUSC partners in Guatemala organizing communities in pursuit of justice. Read more about their powerful experiences.

Youth Ministry Coordinator Position–DC

YOUTH MINISTRY COORDINATOR

All Souls, Unitarian of Washington DC is seeking a dynamic quarter-time Youth Ministry Coordinator to work with adult advisors, teachers and youth in creating a dynamic youth program.

SUMMARY

The Youth Ministry Coordinator, in conjunction with the Director of Religious Education Ministries (DREM) will coordinate programming for across Sunday morning programming, Coming of Age and Our Whole Lives (sexuality education).

DUTIES

With volunteer Youth Advisors and youth coordinate Sunday morning high school youth programming
Communicate with youth and youth group parents
Facilitate OWL offerings for middle and high school congregants as appropriate.
Supervise the Coming of Age (COA) program with the DREM and mentors, including the trip to Boston, for high school congregants
Provide training for adult volunteers
Attend trainings and supplemental education as needed
Attend meetings with Advisors, OWL leaders, COA mentors and DREM as needed

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Youth Ministry Coordinator reports to the Director or Religious Education Ministries

QUALIFICATIONS

25 years old minimum
Experience working with youth, possessing an understanding of human development and adolescent behavior
Experience working with adult volunteers in scheduling and training
Familiarity with values, principles, and practices of Unitarian Universalism
Excellent communication skills
Willingness to learn and use technological aids (i.e. google groups, etc)
Demonstrated organizational skills
Ability to facilitate group activities and excellent team-building skills
Ability to coordinate and support volunteers

HOURS/SALARY

10 hours per week
$10,000 per church year (45 weeks)
