Cultural critic Noam Chomsky, Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry and others lend their voices to the ongoing discussion in this blend of personal stories, political realities and philosophical debate. MERTON: A FILM BIOGRAPHY (2004) Prolific writer and philosopher Thomas Merton‘s work has had a lasting impact on society, inspiring debate over still-relevant social and religious concerns (such as war and faith) for decades. This biography examines the trajectory of Merton’s life, which included a 27-year-stint as a Trappist monk and a vocal opposition to war. Features interviews with singer Joan Baez, the Dalai Lama, publishing magnate Robert Giroux, and others. (120 minutes)

This week’s movie:  COAL COUNTRY (2009) Increasingly, Big Coal is spelling big trouble for Appalachian communities whose members have worked the mines for generations. This documentary reveals why with its explanation of the effects of mountaintop-removal mining on the region. Miners, coal company officials and area residents weigh in on the high price of “cheap energy” — especially when it involves blowing off mountain summits to expose seams. Journalist Michael Shnayerson narrates. (85 minutes)

Many of the above provided either casseroles or dessert more than once, and helped to serve and clean up afterwards.  The HALO Café is a safe and warm place that community members can come in, sit down and enjoy a filling, nutritional meal. Hope and Life Outreach (HALO) is able to provide this valuable service to the community, thanks to the generosity of many caring individuals, churches and local businesses. We from the UUFS did our part to provide dinners four times to more than 60 hungry people each time.

Jim Scott

On Saturday April 24 at 7:30 pm, acoustic guitarist Jim Scott will perform at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Easton. From Carnegie Hall to the Newport Jazz Festival, with Paul Winter to Pete Seeger, for PBS series and for choirs, Jim combines music, laughter, and spiritual and ecological awareness to be one of the most engaging and warm performers you have ever encountered.

Admission is $12; children under 12 are free; and proceeds will benefit the Choptank River Eastern Bay Conservancy. The Easton Fellowship is located at 7401 Ocean Gateway (Rt. 50), on the eastern outskirts of the town.
