This week a prominent TV commentator encouraged his listeners to leave any church whose website uses the phrase “social justice,” a phrase he regards as a code word for totalitarian government. Unitarian Universalists are proud to include among their seven principles “Justice, equity and compassion in human relations.” This Fellowship is proud to list on its “What We Offer” page “The opportunity to join others in social action directed toward such ends as peace, social justice, racial equality and harmony with nature.”
Reasonable people may disagree on the appropriate policies and procedures to employ in an effort to enhance justice in the world. In particular, they may disagree on the relative importance of government action as opposed to private action. But it would be a peculiar religion indeed that excluded the very concept of social justice from its concerns. We welcome your comments.
